Should you stay by the Orlando Airport for your Disney Vacation?
Where to stay on a Disney vacation in Orlando is a common concern of many travelers. Besides selecting their vacation destination, choosing where to stay once they get there, is the biggest decision a family faces. Most people planning a Disney vacation immediately think about staying on Disney property, understanding that the closer to the action, the better overall experience they will have. Then there is a large population of people who say, "I'm flying into the Orlando International Airport, so I will just stay near there." It's true that once you finish your flight, staying near the airport will ensure a quicker trip to your vacation lodging, but do you really want to be thirty minutes from your daily destination while on vacation?
You may think thirty minutes is not a lot and it's true that thirty minutes is nominal in reference to a doctor visit, or as an amount of time spent watching television per day. But what does thirty minutes mean to your vacation? If you're planning to visit a Disney park each day, that thirty minutes turns into one hour immediately by combining driving time to and from the park. One hour per day is a commute to work. Most people want to get as far away from a daily commute as possible when on vacation. Staying near the airport will require a vehicle to get around in every day, which most likely means a rental car, adding hundreds of dollars onto the cost of the vacation.
If you're planning a Disney vacation, you probably want to be surrounded by all things Disney. Staying at the airport completely removes you from your desired vacation atmosphere every time you return to your hotel. That Disney sensation will go away soon enough once your vacation ends and you and your family make that anticlimactic flight back home. While you're in Central Florida, why don't you make it as Disney-filled as possible, from morning to night, by staying near Disney? That way, if you choose to skip the parks for a day or for just part of a day, you can stay around your hotel or vacation home for lunch or shopping and still be surrounded by the ambiance that caters to those on Disney vacations.
Taking time away from the parks and staying around an airport hotel, you may find your family surrounded by stressed, working-mode business professionals which will automatically kill the vacation buzz. And after spending an entire day, exhausting everyone with all the fun and entertainment imaginable, thirty minutes can feel like hours to get you all relaxing in your room or vacation home.
Some people steer away from staying near Disney because they think their only options are Disney-owned and operated accommodations, which may mean more money than they care to spend on lodging. When I mention staying near Disney, that does not necessarily mean staying on Disney property. There are many hotels very close to Disney parks that are not owned by Disney. Even better, there are lots of vacation homes near Disney that offer completely private homes, many with pools, where a family can have breakfast in their own kitchen or take dips in their own pool after a long, hot day at the parks. The cost is surprisingly decent, especially considering the space you get and the amenities that are included, versus hotel accommodations on Disney property.
So while planning your Disney vacation, take another look at your housing options near, but not necessarily at Disney. Staying close to the action not only saves you time each day, but also keeps you immersed in the magic of Disney, whether you choose an Orlando hotel or a private vacation home.
