Staying Safe at Your Orlando Hotel

Millions of people visit the Orlando hotels each year, and most enjoy their vacation without a single issue. While crime is not rampant in the resort areas, it does exist, and taking precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones will help you enjoy your vacation risk-free. Most good quality Orlando hotels and resorts have great security, so you only need to take a few minor steps to stay save on your vacation.

Lock up: It seems simple, but make sure your room door is fully closed when you leave, and that you lock the door while you are inside. Make sure all members of your travel party know not to prop the door open, even if they are just leaving the room for a moment. Securing your room and belongings is the easiest way to prevent theft and loss. Lock your rental or personal car as well, and don’t leave expensive items inside.

Use the room safe: Most Orlando hotel rooms come equipped with an in-room safe. If you must bring along nice jewelry, expensive electronics or large amounts of cash, lock these items up and you’ll be more likely to hold onto them. Limit the amount of pricey items you carry on your person; every time you open your purse or wallet to remove a theme park ticket or other needed item, you risk dropping your cash. For items that are too large for your room safe, ask if the front desk offers safe deposit boxes; these can be handy if you want bring along fine jewelry for a special event. Most high end and all deluxe Disney resorts offer safe deposit services at the front desk for a small fee.

Practice Food Safety: Enjoy visiting one of Orlando’s many famous dining spots, but handle any leftovers with care. Leave the doggy bag behind if your room is not equipped with a refrigerator and microwave. Leaving food exposed to room temperatures for even a short amount of time is asking for trouble, and could even leave you with a nasty case of food poisoning. You’ll enjoy Orlando much more if you can spend time in the theme parks instead of the doctor’s office. Thankfully, many Orlando hotels offer in-room refrigerators, though some charge a small fee for this service.

Keep your Keys Safe: Most Orlando hotels and resorts use a keycard system for room entry. All the keys look alike, and your room number will not be printed on your key (though your name may be). Keep track of your keys, but don’t label them with your room number or other information. Since they may be coded to allow you to charge things to your room, keep track of your room key the same way you would keep track of a regular credit card.

When if Doubt, Valet: If you are out late at night and driving your own vehicle, consider using your resorts valet service if you are not familiar with the area. Navigating your way through a deserted parking lot at 1am is no fun no matter where you are. Most fine Orlando hotels offer valet options that allow you to leave the car right at the resort entrance.
